Emergency Preparedness

Just a reminder that hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th . To best protect life and property in the event of a storm please take some time to review your own plans to assure your safety and well-being.

We are in evacuation Zone A - If an evacuation order is issued for this zone the law requires you to evacuate. If you choose to stay despite the order, please know that emergency vehicles may not be able to reach you during the storm and possibly for an extended period following the storm. In addition, some insurance companies may deny claims for injury if you fail to evacuate when ordered to do so.

A phone app "Ready Pinellas" is available for free and can be a helpful resource. It offers helpful checklists, alerts, information on shelters including those equipped for special needs.

The information is also available on the County website: www.pinellascounty.org/emergency/

If you are in need of a special needs shelter or transportation to a special needs shelter, please register in advance at www.pinellascounty.org/emergency/specialneeds.htm

Remember to plan for your pets as well. Not all shelters take pets so if you expect to go to a shelter note which ones accept pets and the information needed for your pet to be accepted.

This is also a good time to update your personal items inventory and take video of the inside of your unit, and to check your individual insurance coverage limits to make sure they are sufficient. Prepare your property in advance of the storm. Remove all loose items including plants and furniture from balconies and other areas that may become a projectile. Clean out your refrigerator of any food that might spoil in advance of the last trash pickup before the storm, so we can minimize the possibility of rotting food filling up the dumpsters and attracting animals after the storm.

If evacuating, please turn off the main water valve to your unit (these are located on the outside of the building-take the time to find out which valve services your unit). You might also wish to turn off the breaker to your water heater if the manufacturer recommends it.

If you have approved storm shutters, put them up. Please remember that plywood or makeshift shutters are NOT allowed per our Rules and Regulations. You may be financially responsible for any structural damage to the buildings if you use unapproved shutters. If you have a vendor who will be putting up your shutters for you, please make sure they are insured for injury or damage. Check in with your neighbors to see if they need any assistance in preparing for the storm.

If you have evacuated, please wait for the all-clear signal from Pinellas County Emergency Management officials before returning.

Following the storm, clean up of debris is the responsibility of the Association in conjunction with the management company. Please do not risk injury to yourself by trying to move large objects. Small branches can be stacked neatly where they don't block parking areas or sidewalks if you need to move them to access your unit. Do not fill dumpsters with tree branches or other plant waste, or any damaged building materials from your individual unit or any common area. As communications may be disrupted, the Board will make every attempt to get information out to our residents in a timely manner. Exchange contact information with a neighbor, watch for information on the BVIII website and/or the Nextdoor app in addition to official notifications. Be prepared and stay safe this season!
